About Me
I'm a little bit of a jack-of-all-trades and my work history is certainly proof of that but it only tells part of the story. In all my trades and hobbies and practices a common thread connects things; a chance to solve problems, shift my understanding, learn something new, and work with my hands. Personally my hobbies include photography, coffee, motorcycles, travel, and generally making/breaking things. Professionally I have experience that spans customer service, food service, construction, and software development. You can download a copy of my resume HERE.Skills
A resume shows only part of what I may bring to your business as an employee. My hobbies have given me experience employers never could and allowed me to explore my skills more broadly. I've detailed some of these hobbies and experiences below:Motorcycle Mechanics
As my first foray into motorcycle mechanics I bought a 1981 Honda CB650 that had been neglected and stored outdoors for ten years.
I stripped it down to the frame which was then cleaned, primed, and painted.
The motor and carbs were of course siezed and gummed up so once they were out of the bike they got broken down.
The carb was completely dissasembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with kits.
Everything on the motor except the gearbox was taken apart as well.
With new head gaskets, piston rings, and valve clearances set I put the engine back together and into the bike along with all the electronics and parts that had been sitting in carefully labeled bins.
This journey was not without it's issues.
On the first assembly of the motor the cam shafts were not clocked correctly (partly due to a confusing shop manual) and luckily was discovered when I gently rotated the engine by hand. No harm done.
The electrical system also had some quirks like killing the engine when you stepped on the rear brake while in gear.
In hindsight this was an obvious grounding issue fixed by a rework of the wiring harness. When I bought my next bike -- a 2001 Suzuki SV650 -- I continued my learning journey. This time a front end collision by a previous owner meant replacing the entire front end. Steering bearings (upgraded from ball bearings to tapered roller), fork tubes and oil, wheel bearings, speedometer sensor, and some wiring re-routing took place. After a 2500km trip from Calgary to Yellowstone and back I checked and adjusted the valve clearances. This time learning about bucket-over-shim (so much better than screw-and-locknut) and making friends in the Japanse bike community who helped me source new shims.
Car Mechanics
Since my very first vehicle (a baby blue 1981 Fiat Spider) I've had to rely on learning about all aspects of car maintenence and repair.
Usually this is motivated by being able to get to work.
That first car I spent more time working no than driving and while the ratio has never quite been that bad since, I have not owned a vehicle that I have not worked on in some way.
There have been so many projects in this area that I won't expand further, but certainly my knowledge, skillset, and confidence has grown significantly over the years.Construction and Carpentry
Although I have an entry in my job experience section for one company I worked for in construction, it doesn't cover the breadth of experience I actually have in that area.
Most of my time in construction was as a framing carpenter building mostly townhomes but also working on apartment buildings and custom homes.
That said I have worked in most of the typical jobs a carpenter might do; concrete forming, pouring, finishing, removal and replace jobs, and interior and exterior finishing.A memorable experience in concrete was creating the foundation for a twenty thousand square foot house and wedding venue. Instead of a footing, we built grade-beam forms approximately twenty four inches by twenty four inches with rebar woven throughout of course. The pour for this was over multiple days and was around one hundred yards of concrete. After a rough finish for the tops, letting it cure, and stripping the forms we then went on to install a rebar mat across the entire ten thousand square foot footprint. This was my first major concrete job and ever since I've found something fun about it. Tieing rebar in the summer sun by hand might not have been amazing in the momen but seeing the end result was very satisfying.
Nearly all my framing experience was in nw builds, but on time our crew got called out to a partially framed duplex in North Vancouver. Once we got to the unit we walked down into the basement and could not believe what we saw. The party beam (the two floor beams that run down the middle of th two units) had not been supported or framed properly. The result was that the first floor of the house was sagging about six inches. Needless to say this was unnerving to see, and ven more worrisome to be in the house. We set up bracing and came up with a plan to jack up the beams, reinforce the framing under it and return the floor to level. of course with something this major being forgotten by the former framers there was a lot to fix elsewhere and we ended up taking over the job completely and building a strong, sturdy house.
Coffee
I had my first cups of coffee when I was eighteen and going to to school in Friedrichshafen, Germany.
A preference that started as instant coffee mixed with hot chocolate powder was guided by friends towards the french press and Starbucks coffee.
My interest in the growing, harvesting, roasting and preparation of coffee grew from there. One of my favourite things about being involved in the coffee community is the people you meet. While riding my bicycle around my home town I stumbled on a friendly cafe serving delicious drinks. The owners here would introduce me to more than espresso, but to friends from all walks of life. Helping out with cuppings and shop anniversaries I've met so many people and consider it a priviledge to be able to walk into several shops and to treat and be treated as a friend.
While on vacation in Bucharest, Romania my partner at the time and I walked into a small shop expecting a evening coffee. This turned into several more visits, testing cocktails together, and catching up at the World of Coffee expo in Milan, 2022. At on point I stayed on a coffee farm in Vietnam and while eating dinner met an Italian guest who was taking their Q-Grading course. We met up months later in Italy to talk coffee and catch up. As a job I've worked at Starbucks while I was in school but also at the White Rock Farmers Market. Our little team served up drinks as fast as the little La Marzocco Linea Mini could handle.
To me coffee is more than a drink to wake myself up. It's community, and it's understanding that we are the last step in a long chain of people who care about these plants (and should be compensated not just fairly but very well).
Hospitality and Customer Service
In addition to my listed experiences in retail and customer service at Starbucks and Home Hardware,
I've also worked in the produce department of a grocery store (Choices Market), at a skateboard shop (Pura Vida), and in an off-campus university cafe/study space.
I think all of these experiences together gave me a very well rounded understanding of this type of work, as I was interacting with different products, customers, and coworkers. My experience in hospitality is limited however. During my time in Malaysia in 2025 I worked at a hostel called House of Journey in Georgetown. As volunteers we were in charge of getting everyone checked in and out, leading group events every day, and generally fascilitating a safe, fun, and social atmosphere. I personally led groups on street art sunset walks, pub crawls, beach visits, and market days. Beyond these planned activities it was our responsibility to make recommendations about where to eat and visit, as well as how to best get around the island (either by scooter or bus). I enjoyed my time here immensely and really hope to do more of this in the future.
